Everyone is Welcome
As followers of Jesus, we strive to welcome all people to His table.
At Episcopal–Anglican Church of the Atonement, we are a community of faith grounded in worship, prayer, and service. Rooted in the love of Christ and guided by the Anglican tradition, we seek to live out the Gospel through fellowship, discipleship, and care for one another. We strive to be a place of spiritual growth where hearts are nurtured and lives are transformed by God’s grace.
Our doors are open, our hearts are wide, and our hands are outstretched in fellowship. Together, we walk in the hope of Christ and invite you to join us in worship and service.

Our History
The church had its start in 1966 when the Rt. Rev. Henry I Loutit, Bishop of South Florida, had a vision of a new congregation in the Fort Lauderdale area and asked Reverend Knox Brumby to take the charge. He gathered eight people and had the first service at the Recreation Center of the Village Mobile Home Park. The church was commissioned in 1971 in the fledgling city of Lauderdale Lakes. As the attendance started growing, the church moved to a temporary structure at its current location.
The cornerstone of the church building was laid in 1974. In the 1980s, with the influx of migrants from the Caribbean, Atonement gradually became a primarily West Indian church. Our rectors include the Reverend Bruce Powell (1971-1989), Reverend Earl Henry (1998-2018), and, currently, Priest in Residence Reverend Canon Kwasi Thornell.
Today, The Atonement congregation averages 140+ on most Sundays. We are an active parish with many activities. We welcome all.
Opportunities to Fellowship & Serve
Worship, fellowship, and service shape the life of Episcopal–Anglican Church of the Atonement. In worship, members serve faithfully at the altar, prepare the sanctuary, and lift voices in song, helping us offer our very best to God each week. Our children and youth are nurtured in the faith through Sunday School, while lay ministers extend the church’s care through prayer, visits, and the sharing of communion.
Fellowship and learning take many forms, whether gathering for study and prayer, sharing time together in creative groups, or joining in supportive Christian communities that strengthen us for daily living. These settings give space for friendship, encouragement, and deeper discipleship.
Service is at the core of our calling. Members offer hospitality and guidance on Sundays, provide care for health and well-being, support families, and take part in local and global efforts that put faith into action. Each of these ministries reflects a shared desire to serve God, care for one another, and build up the beloved community of Christ.
